Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a special pot to use the Boil Boss?

No, you can use the same round pot that you’d typically use for your seafood boil. Available in three different sizes (Standard, Large, and Small), the Boil Boss crawfish cooler comes with pivoting attachment clips to adjust to the diameter of your pot.

How do I use the Boil Boss cooling system?

Using our seafood boil cooling system is simple. All you’ll need is a hose, which is connected to the Boil Boss via the provided ball valve. After your burner is off and the boiling process is finished, attach the Boil Boss to your crawfish cooker and turn the hose on. The Boil Boss will provide 360° water coverage that cools your boil so it’s ready for the soak.

How long do I keep the Boil Boss on before turning it off?

The Boil Boss is designed to cool your seafood quickly. Cooling time will vary depending on how much you stir and the water volume. Since cooling time can vary, we recommend our innovative crawfish paddle to monitor your boil until it reaches the ideal soak temperature of 150 to 160°. Once its easy-to-read dial reaches the labeled soak range, you can turn your Boil Boss off and begin your soak.

Will the Boil Boss fit my pot?

With a range of sizes available, you can easily find the Boil Boss that fits your pot.

  • Small Boil Boss: fits 60 qt. pots and under
  • Standard Boil Boss (most popular): fits 60 to 120 qt. pots. Has an inner diameter of 25.5 inches.
  • Large Boil Boss: fits 120 to 200 qt pots. Has an inner diameter of 29 inches.

Can I use the Boil Boss for other seafood?

Absolutely! You can use the Boil Boss and our other seafood boil supplies for your crab, lobster, shrimp, or other seafood to prevent them from overcooking during your boil.

What makes the Triple Jet Burner different from other crawfish burners?

The result of a lot of R&D and design, the propane jet burner is designed with a patent-pending triple jet layout to maximize the flame’s surface area on the bottom of your pot for faster boils and more efficient heat transfer.

Every triple jet comes standard with “The Igniter.” The most durable ignition system in outdoor cooking (even in wet conditions), the igniter comes with our patent-pending remote ignition.

Additionally, the Triple Jet Burner comes with our patent-pending Blue Flame technology and Jet tubes. Blue Flame jet tubes and the nozzle arrangement optimize the propane-to-air ratio to deliver a cleaner, hotter flame with a reduced flow rate of propane (you burn less fuel).

Do you offer a warranty on your seafood boil supplies?

We stand behind the durability and quality of our products. Our Boil Boss cooling system and Thermo-Paddle are backed by a lifetime warranty, while we offer a 5-year warranty on the frame and a 1-year warranty on the ignition module and components of our propane jet burner.

What shipping options do you offer?

We use UPS and offer all available UPS shipping options, from ground to next-day air shipping in the US.

Why is dropping the temperature so important?

Dropping the temperature is the most critical step in any boil becuase it stops the cooking process. During the boiling process, the juices and moisture in your seafood escape as they are cooked out and turned into steam. Juices continue to escape and dehyrate your seafood as long as the temperature remains elevated. When dehydrated, your crawfish become filled with air and as a result float on the surface of the pot.

When you rapidly cool, the process reverses, forcing your crawfish to contract and suck up all the juices and flavor they lost during the cooking process. An indication that your crawfish have stopped cooking and absorbed as much juice as possible is once they have sunk to the bottom of the pot.

Won't frozen corn do the trick?

In short, no. The amount of corn needed to make a meaningful reduction in the temperature is unrealistic for any boil.

How about a bag of ice?

We found that a 10lb. bag of ice will only drop the temperaure of a 100 quart pot to around 190F. To reach the target temperaure of 150F and stop the cooking process, over 20lbs. of ice would be needed. Take ice off the grocery list and stop diluting your recipe!

Why shouldn't I just keep spraying the pot with my garden hose?

When you manually spray your pot with a garden hose, only specific areas of the pot are being cooled. More importantly, because you have your hands full spraying, you cannot stir the pot at the same time. Stirring the pot, while spraying, is critical for rapidly reducing the temperature. If you do not stir, the only water you are cooling is what is making direct contact with the pot wall. What makes the Boil Boss so effective is that it provides a constant shower of water around the entire pot, freeing your hands to be able to stir.

Do I have to change my process with the Boil Boss?

No. Your boiling process all remains the same. The Boil Boss is only a 3-5 minute added step once your burner has been turned off.

Why shouldn't I just turn the burner off and let them soak?

If you just turn off your burner and wait for your crawfish to sink on their own, they will have cooked for 30+ minutes. Without the Boil Boss, the temperature of your pot will stay well above 180F for 30+ minutes (your seafood cooks above 150F). The only reason your crawfish sink is becuase the temperature has dropped. If you are waiting for your bugs to sink on their own, they are overcooking!

Will the Boil Boss be able to withstand the heat from my pot?

Yes. The Boil Boss is manufactured out of a high temp thermoplastic. In addition, the Boil Boss should be attached once your burner has been turned off.
